How to choose the right lens
With a dizzying array of camera lenses for sale, how do you choose the one that'll give you the best results? Here are some factors to keep in mind as you shop:
Lens mount: Each brand of camera has its own proprietary lens mount, so not every lens for sale will work with your camera. Make sure you choose a lens with a compatible mount.
Focal length: The point of using a separate lens is to get a superb picture at a specific distance. So, do you want to shoot wide-angle shots, or closeups? The focal length of the lens will tell you exactly how close to your subject you'll need to be to get a beautiful, in-focus shot.
Keep in mind that shorter focal lengths (28mm or less) provide wide-angle shots, while higher focal lengths bring you up close and personal with faraway subjects. We even have telephoto lenses with focal lengths from 300mm to 400mm, these lenses can bring the subject of your shot closer even when you are far away from it!
Aperture: Simply put, the aperture determines how much light gets in through the lens. Surprisingly, the lower the maximum aperture
value, the
more light gets into your shots (and vice versa).
Lenses with wider maximum apertures (such as f/2.8 or a lower value) let you get low-light shots, in focus, at quicker shutter speeds. That's great news if you need to shoot moving subjects indoors, for example.
