Sony Store on Santa Monica Blvd is useless...

By NowHateSony

from New Jersey.

Comments about Sony HDR-CX700V 96GB High Definition Flash Memory Camcorder with GPS:

I purchased this camcorder to use for professional interviews and videos. I needed a wireless mic for it. Made the mistake of actually asking the SONY Store on Santa Monica Blvd in CA which wireless mic to use with this new camcorder. They sold me the ECM HW 2. Shot my interviews for a VERY IMPORTANT job. Came back to the east coast and the audio was tinnish and muffled. Spoke online with Sony's horrible CS and they said the mic is NOT COMPATIBLE with the 700...Now thousands of dollars in travel fees and time is wasted. Thanks Sony.

Appears to be good product but Sony CS is horrible

By AngryNow

Comments about Sony HDR-CX700V 96GB High Definition Flash Memory Camcorder with GPS:

Dealing with Sony has been an absolute nightmare. It started with trying to talk to a knowledgeable salesman/tech support person about the undocumented specifications of the camera (e.g., LANC control, video out capabilities). I must have spoken with 10 different individuals and all they could do was read me the specs off the website that I could plainly read for myself. Most of them had no idea what LANC even was (they all thought I was talking about the “length of the camera). Pretty pathetic nobody there seems to know their product, and can't even refer customers to a tech support guru who does. So I ended up making a leap of faith and purchasing the cameras anyway and hoping that they worked for my application. Next disappointment was the packaging for the 2 videocameras I ordered - no padding whatsoever in the box that they were shipped in. Seems like a manufacturer of sensitive electronics would know how to ship things - no excuse there, especially not for $2.5 k worth of cameras. Then by the time our project engineer was able to test one of the key features that we needed (simultaneous LANC in and analog video out), which turned out not to work (unlike the previous line of cameras that we tested), I was slightly past the 30 day return period. No sympathy from Sony there, despite the fact that they weren’t able to answer my pre-purchase questions that would have spared us all the entire debacle. And that was after they passed the buck around to 9 different people/departments over the course of 2.5 weeks. Of course it was somewhat my own fault for not figuring out the problem before the 30 day return period ended, but I expected a lot more professionalism from Sony and was hoping for a little bit of slack on the return. No such luck on either count, and many, many hours wasted. Sony appears to make a good product but lord help you if you ever need help from customer service or tech support. Those cons outweigh the benefit of a good product to me, so I don't plan to buy another Sony anything anytime soon... So anybody need 2 mint-condition CX700Vs?

My reaction to the HDR-CX700V

By Abelard

from Plymouth, Michigan

Pros

  • Great Resolution
  • Many options

Cons

  • Lacks intermittent recording
  • no Mac support thus the GPS cannot be activated
  • telescoping viewfinder loses it setting

Best Uses

Comments about Sony HDR-CX700V 96GB High Definition Flash Memory Camcorder with GPS:

I just purchased the HDR-CX700v as a replacement for my DCR-HC90 HandyCam [insurance claim money]. The CX700 lacks the intermittent recording that was so great to record changing cloud formations, people boating on a lake, stormy weather or just moving people. Another difference was its lack of software support for the Macintosh platform. That is a major disappointment and almost a deal breaker. Although the retailer I purchased this from insists Sony supports Mac a phone call to a very helpful service center at Sony said otherwise. To activate/enable the GPS to work you need to install something from the enclosed DVD that is not Mac compliant. Therefore the GPS does not work for us Mac users. However, the resolution is spectacular. The zoom is smooth and easy to control. There are many new features and upgrades. The screen although brilliant in sunlight is slightly awkward to use. The previous HC-90 allowed me to create a personal screen of functions I used most often. The CX700 does not [I miss that]. The CX-700 body is smaller than the HC-90 to handle. I would have preferred something larger for my hand [6 ft stature] and fingers. My greatest negative issue though with this CX-700V model is the viewfinder. The diopter setting you set when using the viewfinder does NOT hold or stay when telescoping the viewfinder to a closed and then open position. It must be reset every-time. This is also a criticism posted by another reviewer somewhere on this web page. The viewfinder was one of the selling features when compared to the 550 model. I chose this 700 model because it was Sonys best in its class camcorder. I had my choice of the entire market for camcorders. Although these are my criticisms the DCR-HC90 is no longer available causing me to find the best of the new models out there. I have purchased various Sony products for decades and am a loyal user. However the competition is becoming stronger and better.

    Pros

    • good battery life.
    • Picture Quality

    Cons

    • Viewfinder not viable

    Best Uses

Comments about Sony HDR-CX700V 96GB High Definition Flash Memory Camcorder with GPS:

I agree if you want to use viewfinder you must refocus micro diopter wheel EVERY Time.
It really lowers the quality of this camera.

      Good Camera!!

      By Kevmaninc

      from New York, NY

      Pros

      • 24p Mode
      • 60p Mode
      • Portability
      • Small
      • Stabilization
      • Vivid Colors

      Cons

      • Not too much Manual control

      Best Uses

Comments about Sony HDR-CX700V 96GB High Definition Flash Memory Camcorder with GPS:

Love It!!!! Put it through heavy testing and it does a great job. No way to burn 60p video to BLU-RAY but you can always convert to 30p or 24p then burn till they make a way to burn 60p. Colors are great, stabilization is unreal, sound is really good too. I would however say that taking pictures with this thing is bad but I don't intend to use this for picture taking just home videos mostly. Great for those who like to walk and record a lot. Type kevmaninc on youtube if you want to see some test video in NYC.
