This product has been great. Not only will it satisfy your home theater needs, but it's a great pure audio product. It's all of those wrapped up into one nice package. It provides more inputs that you'll ever need, and you have many options in which to use your inputs. As a child of the 70's, my music history goes back as far as LP's, so it's great having the phono input w/RCA-ground application. I run a turntable, Cassette Deck, CD Recorder (as my music components); Sony PS3, HDD DVD Recorder, Satellite HD Reciever, 3D Blu-Ray player all HDMI in/out. All of this hooks up to my 3D HDTV with ONE connection from the Onkyo Receiver. Excellent!! Firmware set-up went well, Establishing my home network also went well with the receiver. Have had no problems (so far) with over-heating. All configurations work great: speakers for 5.1 set up, HD Radio (this is great for a music person like me), and am still learning new things everyday as I grow with the receiver. You have to be patient, READ THE MANUAL CAREFULLY, and follow all steps and procedures. Product arrived in a timely manner as well. Excellent service!

theater setup. Features are what made me buy it. The negative is: I did not know from reviews, the choice is incompatible with my Pioneer Elite 65" and the components. The 809 is limited to 100% digital. My TV, VCR, Laser Disc are analog.
Setup reqired all the components video go to the TV's 4 ports. The sound is handled thru the 809. However the microphone speakers settings only work with HDMI hookups. I will never fully be able to appreciate the 809 till I replace my $9000 TV. I don't beleive there is a VCR or Laser Disc fix. The sound I am getting is not nearly has full as the $3300 Maranz that died on me. It was analog and digital, but not HDMI. All of my equipment was purchased Dec 2000 way before HDMI and Blu Ray. However at the time, it was the best available. The TV's picture is stellar using Blu Ray or HD TV.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR809 7.2-Channel 3D Ready Home Theater Receiver:

This thing switches all 8 of my hdmi sources without issues, has numerous picture controls/upscaling for every input, multichannel input (i use for my older sacd player), passes 3d perfectly, has networking capabilities, great internet radio features (which sound even better than i was expecting in surround). Audyssey makes it sound even better. Easy to get firmware updates over the ethernet connection. I would recommend a wired ethernet connection; i used the wireless adapter with a previous model (709) with poor results. In every respect I find the 809 to be better than the 709 and for the current prices I think the 809 is one of the best values in a receiver that i've ever seen.

Yes, Zone2 or Zone3 needs to be turned on to activate the 12v trigger.

            • Q:

I can't get the HDMI to pass through with audio to TV when receiver is in standby. I get only video, setting on receiver is HDMI through with Cable/Sat selected. Is it necessary to have TV speakers selected also? I don't like this option as it alters audio when I'm using the receiver and don't want TV speakers to play.

I am contemplating buying this Receiver. I wish to run a LG 3D Blu-Ray Player, Magnavox HDD DVD Recorder, Dish Network HD Satellite Receiver, Sony PS3, and my stero components: Kenwood Turntable, Sony Double Cassette Deck, Sony CD-REcorder. My question is, most older receivers that have input/output for CD Recorders/Tape Decks work great for that set-up (especially if you, like me, like to convert LP's to CD). However, I notice there is no input/output RCA terminal that is set up like this. How would I use my Sony CD-REcorder with the Onkyo Receiver to achieve the recording capabilities from my turntable or tape deck even?

                A:

You should be able to use the Zone 2 or 3 output on the receiver to the CD Recorder and record any of the analog sources plugged into the receiver. Otherwise, you could use the DVR in and out analog on the receiver and just record whatever analog source you have plugged in to the DVR input. If you do that then you would want to leave the HDMI for DVR empty.
