I am technically inclined but not in tune with recent advancements. Found the manual to be difficult to follow. Had to read through it several times, and consult with an associate where I bought the product. Outputs did not work as expected, which defeated some purposes.

Easy Set Up Good for video but

Comments about Harman Kardon AVR 1600 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

I have this set up as a 5.1 using Definitive Technology Monitor 450's in the front, Polk LT-1 for center and both rears and a Pyle self amplified Dual Voice coil 150 watt RMS call A/B sub.

Before the Def Tech the speakers I was using the AVR did not have enough power to drive them. The Def Techs are easy to power and when I hooked them up it really lifted the performance of this AVR.

I really like the set up and the remote. Set up was really easy (almost like setting up and Apple product). The front panel can be set to dim or fad till completely dark which is nice when watching movies (no visual distraction).
It also has a night time audio feature which can step down the bass from normal to half to low. Great for night watching when people are sleeping.

One Call gives great support. No long hold times and staff knows their stuff. I purchased my stuff from Jamin B and he really knows his stuff and is really good with his follow up.

I tried every way I could think of to hook up my iPod or Macbook Pro to use it as a music source and it will not work. I added Apple TV to the set up and now it plays all my music, music videos (like the MTV old school ones) and it will play them without missing a thing.
With your music set up with network sharing it gives you access to al of your iTunes content. The screen saver even puts up pictures from your iPhoto library 9very nice touch). I would recommend Apple TV as the way to pull your content into your AVR vs. an Apple Airplay approved.

To be fair to this unit, I have a Marantz PM-80 Class A/B Integrated Amp and a Cal Audio Labs Icon Mark II cd player so most AVR's would sound less than 5 stars when stacked up agains a unit like my Marantz.

Comments about Harman Kardon AVR 1600 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

I unplugged the unit 1 day after initial setup. All settings were lost. HK customer support says it needs to be plugged in for 1 month to fully charge internal memory battery. They were very quick to respond but it would have been nice if this was in the manual.

      • Q:

Does this receiver offer the capability (as some Denons do) of using two of the side or rear channel amps to "bi-amp" speakers that can be bi-ampped?

Are there ANY pre-amp output jacks on rear?

Is there a "sleep timer" available?

        Thanks, BB

          A:

The AVR1600 does have a sleep timer . Up to 90 minutes in 10 minute increments .
It does not have any pre-amp inputs.
It does not have the ability to assign amplifiers to bi-amp.
